Finding inspiration to create a legend.

The photo is from the farm, above the farm house, where we have a piece of land that is yet to be developed. We have a problem with babboons. The problem is that if we had vineyards up there, they would simply eat and destroy, so we are currently investigating other potential uses like buchu, olives, etc.

How tranquil does my sister appear? We often find ourselves up here at the end of the day to watch the sun disappear over the valley. Its so quiet up there you can hear the wind in the birds’ wings as they fly over your head. It’s a rare spot of absolute quiet.

Our entire family is driven to find these inspirational places, and we have a few of them scattered across the farm, hidden little gems that transform you into the lucky soul who comes across them. Like “Chicken soup for the Soul”, these places give us the inspiration to go out and make sure every vine is perfect, to make sure we are continuously trimming the excess off them so that 100% of the effort of the vine goes into the fruit, and not the leaves.

It inspired us to have huge arguments over label design, which corks to use et al. For 2010, we are going with more eco friendly boxes, and going to offset our carbon footprint (as tiny as it is), by planting the correct amount of trees on the farm.

We realise we are custodians of an incredible piece of land, which could never wholly be ours as we could never lay claim to something so grand. The fact that we are allowed to make use of this amazing piece of terroir, inspires us to use only the best, purest ways to create wines that we hope will carry forth the legend of the farm into far off places, whilst maintaining a close, family focus to what we do.

Finding inspiration to create a legend is not hard work, when you are privy to such beauty, such depth, and such natural grace.
